Peanuts are a multipurpose oilseed legume, offering benefits in many ways. Apart from the beneficial effects of the peanut plant on soil quality, peanut seeds are nutritious and important from a medical and economic point of view. In this review, information is provided on the origin of the peanut and its domestication. Peanuts are rich in bioactive components, including phenols, flavonoids, polyphenols, and resveratrol. In addition, the participation of peanuts in biological nitrogen fixation is very significant.

Recent reports on Arachis hypogaea Recombinant responses and N2 fixation capacity in response to abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, heat stress, and iron deficiency in calcareous soils, have been incorporated. As a biotechnological note, recent advances in the development of transgenic peanut plants are also highlighted. In this context, the regulation of transcriptional factors and gene transfer for the development of stress-tolerant peanut genotypes are of paramount importance. Above all, this review signifies the importance of peanut cultivation and human consumption in the face of global climate change to maintain food security.
